Hospice Southeastern Connecticut Honors Florist and Rose Program Volunteers
March 9, 2010 – Hospice Southeastern Connecticut recently honored the florists and volunteers who participate in the Rose Program with a wine and cheese reception. Sixteen florists in southeastern Connecticut donate roses as an outreach to the community. These roses are delivered by a trained volunteer to the family of patients who have died on the Hospice Southeastern Connecticut program. Nursing staff who have cared for Hospice Southeastern Connecticut patients at skilled nursing facilities also receive a rose.
Hospice Southeastern Connecticut Celebrates 25 Years of Serving New London County
January 22, 2010 – Hospice Southeastern Connecticut has been serving the community for 25 years. Founded in 1985 by a coalition of home care agencies and Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, the organization began in New London with one Hospice Coordinator. In 1989, the board of directors voted to become an independent agency in order to achieve Medicare Hospice Certification, and the Board was then comprised of all community representatives.
NFA Students Donate Time and Cookies to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut
December 21, 2009 – Students for the Norwich Free Academy Project Outreach and Italian Club donated dozens of home-baked cookies to be given to patients of Hospice Southeastern Connecticut during the holidays. They also donated time and talent to a gift-wrapping fundraiser at the Mohegan Sun where shoppers could have their gifts wrapped for a small donation to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut.
Five Hospice Aides are Certified or Recertified by NBCHPN
December 17, 2009 – Five Hospice Southeastern Connecticut hospice aides recently passed a rigorous exam to become certified or recertified by the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN). Jim Hooper, Jessica Ruley, Sylvia Fournier and Sandey Marchand all were recertified as Nursing Assistants, and Lynda Souza received certification for the first time. Each showed competency in their field with tests measuring the knowledge of Nursing Assistants working in end-of-life care.
Bayberry Insurance Helps Hospice Southeastern Connecticut
December 17, 2009 – Bayberry Insurance owner Pam Atkins celebrated her agency’s 20th anniversary by giving back to the community, and Hospice Southeastern Connecticut was one of the recipients. Bayberry clients were asked to vote for the community organizations most important to them. The three highest vote-getters each received donations of $1,000 from the insurance agency.
Hospice Southeastern Connecticut provides care at home and often skilled nursing facilities for people facing the end of life, regardless of age, disease or inability to pay. Bayberry client Maureen Plumleigh said, “My mom spent three years in our home, actively participating in our lives. When her back pain was diagnosed as spinal cancer, her needs eventually grew beyond our abilities and I called Hospice Southeastern Connecticut.
Wireless Zone Foundation for Giving Donates $3,000 to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut
November 23, 2009 – On November 18, representatives from the Wireless Zone Foundation for Giving presented Carol Mahier, Executive Director of Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, with a grant of $3,000 for the agency’s Live Alone Program.
Sheffield Pharmaceuticals Donates $4,000 to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut
November 16, 2009 – On November 4, the newly formed Contributions Committee of Sheffield Pharmaceuticals donated $4,000 to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut. Carol L. Mahier, Executive Director of the organization, accepted the donation.
“On behalf of our patients and their families, we thank Sheffield Pharmaceuticals for their outstanding generosity,” said Mahier. “Sheffield understands that end-of-life issues affect the patient’s family as well as the patient, and businesses need to be aware of the services we provide for the entire family, including those who continue to work while caring for their loved one.”
McKenna's Flower Shop Donates $523 from Tomato Plant Sale
August 17, 2009 - McKenna’s Flower Shop on Boswell Avenue in Norwich recently donated $523 to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut from a tomato plant sale. Throughout the summer, the shop sold 1,500 plants and gave the entire proceeds to Expressive Arts Program at the non-profit organization. [more>>]

Hospice Southeastern Connecticut Racing Series a Great Success!
July 20, 2009 - 120 boats and over 300 sailors participated in the 20th Anniversary Hospice Southeastern Connecticut Regattas on July 15 and July 18, 2009 at the Stonington Dinghy Club, Thames Yacht Club, Niantic Bay Yacht Club and Mystic River Mudhead Benefit Regatta. From one-person Optimists to 40 foot boats with crews of 8, there was racing all along the Eastern Connecticut shoreline to raise funds for Hospice Southeastern Connecticut. [more>>]

Dogwatch Café Supports Hospice Southeastern Connecticut
April 13, 2009 - The Dog Watch Café in Stonington, Connecticut announces their support of Hospice Southeastern Connecticut by donating a portion of the proceeds of any lunch or dinner patron who mentions the non-profit organization on June 1, 2009.
Patrons may have lunch or dinner at the restaurant on that day. By telling their server that they are supporting Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, the restaurant will donate 20% of the price of the meal.
Hospice Southeastern Connecticut Welcomes New Medical Director, Dr. Joseph Alessandro
March 23, 2009 – Hospice Southeastern Connecticut recently welcomed Joseph Alessandro, D.O. as its newest medical director. Dr. Alessandro is board certified by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), and has been a practicing physician for 12 years.
