McKenna’s Flower Shop Donates $523 from Tomato Plant Sale

McKenna’s Flower Shop on Boswell Avenue in Norwich recently donated $523 to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut from a tomato plant sale.  Throughout the summer, the shop sold 1,500 plants and gave the entire proceeds to Expressive Arts Program at the non-profit organization.

Hospice Southeastern Connecticut’s Expressive Arts Program is offered free of charge to children and teenagers between 5 and 17 who are grieving the loss of a loved one.  The program is led by a certified Expressive Arts Therapist, encouraging participants to draw, paint or act out their inner feelings, wishes, fears and hopes.  Supplies are provided, and artistic talent or training is not required.  Children and teenagers are offered a safe setting within which to cope with their current life situation.  It is a supportive and non-threatening activity.

Peter Charron, co-owner McKenna’s Flower Shop, grew the plants from seeds.  “When I heard about the Expressive Arts Program at Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, I knew it was a program I wanted to support,” Charron said.  “Art therapy helps kids out when they are at their most vulnerable.”
